UMass Boston Asian American Studies Program
26 February 2010 — Performance with praCh Ly
Student Feedback from AsAmSt 223L (compiled by Laura Ng)

•    “I really enjoyed the presentation and the fact that I got to talk to him before he performed.”

•    “I thought he was very inspirational in what he does. I can’t believe to this day how corrupt Cambodia is and why the rest of the world don’t say nothing. I liked his beats for his music. It was funny how he said, “I run Long Beach!” I’m worried what may happen to him if he goes back to Cambodia on his tour…I might buy his CD soon just to support him.”

•    “praCh Ly was an inspiring event. His story and how he used music as his coping method is a great, powerful story. Not only does he cope with his conflicts, he also spreads the story, inspire, make aware of the Cambodian experience to the people. Touching and relevant to our generation to spread awareness and unity for Asians in the U.S. His story of struggle and in finding his identity is truly inspiring and eye-opening for everyone.”

•    “I liked praCh and his trials and tribulations to be where he is at right now. It was unfortunate that the laptop monitor didn’t work, I was curious about what he would share with us. I like that his music has substance and is not like “corporate” music labels.

•    “I liked the raps he did in Cambodian even though I didn’t understand it; it sounded good…I felt sad for him when he said he didn’t have a birthday, not knowing the month and exact day you’re born at is something I wouldn’t want and would be sad about for life.”

•    “I liked the message praCh came with and even though I couldn’t understand him, I didn’t mind. I wish there was a larger Cambodian representation; I think that would have been more fun.”

•    “I support what praCh is doing for the Cambodian community because I believe he is the voice for Cambodians and Cambodian Americans to let others know about their past and their history…how much they have suffered. He is truly a role model for all, not just Cambodians.”

•    “I really enjoyed praCh’s visit because of the story and message he brought to share. The message he shared was to know yourself. He is a great performer and role model and I hope that others would get the chance to hear his words. His performance was really fun even if we didn’t have a working projector.”

•    “I realized a lot about Cambodia during praCh’s visit. His music was real hip-hop which in rapping is about personal experience. The only problem was that I did not understand much of what he said in Cambodian.”

•    “praCh Ly is such an inspiration. He is very compassionate towards his work, people, and community. praCh has accomplished some very large achievements and he is very humble about it. I respect how he/makes music about things that matter…not only does his music send a strong message, it is very enjoyable, too.”
