Mike Siv   -----   film maker

Michael "Adoe" Siv was born in Phnom Penh and raised in the Tenderloin.  Like many of the families in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, he and his mother had fled the chaos and bloodshed of the Khmer Rouge in their native Cambodia.  Mike and director Nakasako have known each other for over ten years, having met at a video workshop that Nakasako taught at the Vietnamese Youth Development Center.   Mike is a recent graduate of San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Liberal Studies.  His first documentary, Who I Became, follows the life of Ponnloeu Chia, a 21-year old Cambodian refugee on the brink of fatherhood and in the middle of Federal probation.  The film is part of the PBS series Matters of Race.   When not studying or working on film projects, Siv spends his time coaching the Tenderloin youth basketball team The Little Bombers.

Hello to all,

Sorry for the mass email. You guys all know I got
nothing but respect for each individual. Most of the
people should be Cambodians so I'm just trying to
reach out and see if you guys can help us with these
DVDs coming. Been a bit busy with the Doc on that damn
rapping Cambodian name praCh--just kidding.

Our media lab at VYDC here in San Francisco have been
working on two DVDs, ONE is all of the collected works
of young kids in the TL--stories range from girls
wanna have fun to dreams of doing a kick flip, and the
second one is the professional which is all of Spencer
Nakasako's three films AKA Don Bonus--about a
Cambodian high school drop out, Kelly Loves Tony--a
mien couple, and Refugee. All in all both DVDs are the
works from the media lab from VYDC for the last 15
years which also includes a How To Do, meaning there
is a section where Spencer and the kids show how you
can make a film--or at least the way we make films.

There is a lot of stuff on these DVDs anyone can
benefit. I'm not the outreach person for these DVDs
but I wanted to see if you guys are interested in
these DVDs. Of course I'm also kind of a nice guy so
I'll probably hand out 50 pairs of these DVDs to those
who can't afford them. And we're not trying to get
rich of these DVDs but to get it out there. We're just
asking for any Donation--from a couple of bucks to
whatever you think you can afford/you hear that
Silong, couple of bucks you cheap ass--just kidding.

Thanks for taking you guys valuable time to read this
email and I'm sorry if I'm not descriptive enough.
Anyone has any idea to distribute these DVDs please
let me know.

P.S...We're trying to get the praCh Documentary done
by the fall so look for that.

Sincerely Mike Siv
